Revitalize Maynard Collaborative to Meet Tomorrow NIght

Most people reading this know that I love this little town that I live in. Maynard is just a really nice place to live. And I was thrilled when an organized bunch of concerned citizens started up a group they call "The Revitalize Maynard Collaborative". They are smart, well-organized, and passionate about this place—yup, I had to join them.

This group has managed to get support and members from various different interests in Maynard. There are business owners, members of ArtSpace, lawyers, and families—all coming together just to try to make this a better place. See, we know it's great, but those of us who live her know it could be so much more!

Tomorrow night, October 30th, is their next meeting. It starts at 7pm in the lower meeting hall of the Town Hall building. If you live in Maynard and want to make a difference, come on out!

Is Monster.com Leaving Maynard?

I had heard that Monster.com was going to be leaving the Mill. I don't know how much of that is true. I did hear from a friend, whose company is looking to get space in the Mill, that building 5 (Monster's space) would not be available because it's expected to be converted to condos.

I'm not sure if it's true, so if you spread the rumor, also make sure to say that it's just that—a rumor. If it does turn into housing, it's going to be some great space with the exposed brick, beamed ceilings, and water views.

If I hear any more on it, I'll post it.

Maynard's Downtown Trick-or-Treat 10/24

Tomorrow (10/24) from 4–6pm Maynard shuts down Nason and Main Streets so that the Assabet Valley Chamber of Commerce can host their annual downtown trick-or-treat event. I've been before, before I was a mom, and boy—what a scene! The streets are loaded with miniature goblins, princesses, and creatures, all collecting goodies from our downtown businesses.

This will be the first year that my daughter will be going. She's pretty darn excited. I'm sure we'll have a great time.

Maynard Farmers' Market End-of-Season Recap

There will be a meeting on 11/7 at 7 pm at the Serendipity Café to discuss the 2013 Farmers' Market and how we might make improvements for the 2014 Market. All are welcome to attend.

What's with the slide at Coolidge Park? And Reo Road???

I'm not claiming to know which answer is true, but from what I've heard, the slide at Coolidge Park is closed because the town is waiting for it to be insured. Part of the problem is that it wasn't built according to the specifications that were laid out in the beginning. I'm not sure why they didn't just make the contractor just rip it out and put it where it's supposed to be. But as I said, I don't really know a whole lot.

As for Reo Road playground. you probably already know why the center of the park is empty, but I'll refresh... When the contractors went to start the build on the planned center structure, they found that the fill of the playground wasn't suitable/stable enough for the intended play element. The cost of removing the lousy fill and replacing it with new would have eaten the entire budget for the park. So a simpler structure that can get the proper support will be going in. It looks to be the kind of thing that has a several climbing elements and a few slides. The color scheme is going to be "woodsy"—forest green and tan. And the sand table is currently off limits because it needs to have the sand removed and replaced with play sand.

But the parks are FANTASTIC! We've already clocked some twenty hours in the parks since they opened about a month ago. Our particular favorite is Coolidge's giant web climber.  If you haven't seen them, check them out.

New Opening Date for Serendipity Café

I guess when you're excited to get something started it's easy to think things will fall right into place exactly as you want. The Serendipity Café hoped to be open the end of October, but they've had to push the opening day out to Friday, November 1st. Best to just get it right, no? We're hoping good things for them.

Kick-off Event: ArtSpace Maynard Second Saturdays!

TOMORROW Artspace is hosting a mini OPEN STUDIOS and opening reception for Jill Pottle's solo show. 4 - 6pm for OS and 5-7pm for the reception. I'll be there!

We'll be doing this every 2nd Saturday—mini OS and a reception for new show in the gallery! This is an excellent opportunity for ArtSpace to be more involved with the community. We're always being asked why we're not open more. Well, here you go! Now come and visit. 

Jill's work is really amazing. She loves painting insanely complex still life images of glass and other equally reflective surfaces. 

There will be twenty participating artist studios. I'll be one of them. It won't be long until most of the artists are just dying to open their doors. 

Please come and visit us and tell all the artists how great you think it is that they're open. 

A Newish Thrift Store in Town

Perhaps you haven't noticed it yet, but I did—there's a new little thrift shop on Nason St. across from Gallery 7. Technically, it's not really new. Pickers Pocket was located on Main St. down in the big building that's slated for demolition. They were going to lose their space, so that opted to shift to a different location.

I happened to be in Gallery 7 when I noticed a flashing "open" sign across the way. Curious, my daughter and I made our way over to check it out. It's perfectly thrift. They are still setting up, but it seems like a good and interesting mix of things. I walked out with an excellent salad bowl that I can also use as a trifle dish—$3.

Okay, so that's a new business downtown! All of you who are interested in a thriving downtown should take the time to stop in and welcome the owner, Denise, to the soon-to-be bustling section of Nason.

Open Studios at ArtSpace September 28 and 29—this weekend!

Maynard is loaded with Artists. They even have their own building—an old middle school that was converted to artist's studios. In a space that has remained 100% full for all the years it has been open, I consider myself lucky to have a space there.

This weekend is our Open Studios. You can come and take a peek into all the studios and get an idea of what it takes to make the art you see.

I make hats, so if you're interested in those, you'll find me in my studio with my studio mate, Andrew Child (he's a photographer). I also do mixed-media collages that I love to talk about.

So do come down this weekend and visit. And don't be shy about stepping into studios and asking people why they make what they make.

Update on the remodel of Maynard's playgrounds

Just got this in my inbox:

"The Town of Maynard is officially opening Reo and Coolidge Parks, this Friday, September 27, 2013 at 8:00 am.  The Town has diligently been working with the Contractor and Design Engineer to complete several items that were not completed at the parks late this summer, and is excited to open the parks. There is one play structure at each park that still has ongoing safety issues and these structures are currently fenced off with orange safety fencing. The issues surrounding these pieces of equipment are being reviewed and we hope to resolve the issues and open the structures for public use soon. The Town asks the residents to please stay off of these pieces of equipment and sectioned off areas until the DPW removes the safety fencing, and announces via this web page that these structures are safe to use.

In addition, the Town has identified a favorable solution for the Reo Road Park for the installation of a play structure that will be installed in place of the previously designed “play mound.”  We are now in the process of working to get this procured and installed for use and enjoyment by the end of the calendar year.

Book Launch for Local Author Julie Berry at the Maynard Public Library

Julie Berry lives just around the corner from me here in Maynard. I usually only see her when I'm on my way to my studio. 

On Thursday, September 26 there's going to be a Book Launch Party for Jher at the Maynard Public Library. The gathering will take place in the Roosevelt Room at 7 pm.

Julie's new Young Adult book is All the Truth That's in Me! Julie now has a major publisher, a national book tour and a starred review from Kirkus—all really big deals! Refreshments will be served.

Come grab a book, congratulate her, and shake her hand!
